Horseback riding is inherently a dangerous activity, yet while most states require certification or licensing of realtors, beauticians, plumbers and aerobic instructors, an uncertified riding instructor is permitted to put a 5 year old child on the back of a 2,000 pound horse and try to teach him/her the fundamentals of riding. Unfortunately, there are instructors who are not competent to do this and the results can be disastrous. In other cases the instructor may be highly proficient yet not know how to conduct his/her lesson business in a professional and businesslike manner, which results in financial pressures forcing the instructor to leave the business. The ARICP (American Rding Instructor Certification Program) was established in 1984 with the objective of helping to solve these problems by identifying instructors who teach knowledgeably, safely and with integrity.
